“Next up on the Barely Regal stage was Among Brothers, an “experimental-indie-pop-folk” sextet from right here in Cardiff. The room was absolutely heaving as person upon person attempted to come in to catch a glimpse of this exciting new band right up until the band started. What Among Brothers produced over the next forty-odd minutes was a true joy to behold; the band fuse together a melodic blend of intelligent experimental electronica. The layered vocal harmonies were just awesome, all the differing tones just bounced effortlessly around the room and combined with the wealth of instrumental textures it all slotted together so very well. Among Brothers build tracks up from absolutely nothing and just construct them in such a way that just has you transfixed to this imaginatively beautiful outfit. Tracks like ‘My Head is a Vessel’ and ‘Loved’ are the ones that marginally edge out the others but it really is marginal as song after song this group just seemed to get better. Ringing guitars and perfectly timed percussion parts are understated elements of the tracks that has seen their debut EP Homes receive a string of positive reviews, leading to a spot on the BBC Introducing Stage at this year’s Big Weekend. They did not put a foot wrong throughout and after a scintillating performance I am sure this is not the last I will see of Among Brothers.”

Among Brothers shoehorn themselves onto the stage just after Effort, their sound shimmering on the surface like moonlight on water. “Sŵn is our favourite time of the year”, they shout over the packed room as they tune up. “It’s better than Christmas!” Perfectly poised violin nips around vocal, over vocal, over shouts to the sky. There is a steady persistence to each wave of limitless crescendo that moves together, smashing through the humid room in pockets of perfect clarity.

“Barely Regal’s own (and indeed its owners) Among Brothers took an age to soundcheck, all the while person upon person tessellated their heads to build an impenetrable hair wall between MMP and the band. The Undertone pillars were also rather unhelpful in this respect but such is the charm and quirk of the venue and, evidently, Among Brothers’ appeal. Not that the lack of visual identification really mattered. It was definitely them. You could tell by the immensely thoughtful soundscapes that borrowed from electronica and offbeat indie experimentalism, layering harmonies and almost Dexy’s-esque shared vocals. In totality, this meant a proper aural treat with each new, imaginative and unexpected turn convincing us more and more that these chaps are the real frickin’ deal.”

“Taking influence from the orchestral likes of Efterklang, Anathallo and Sufjan Stevens, Cardiff six-price Among Brothers fuse an amalgamation of inspiration and instrumentation to interpret their flurry-filled fusions of sweeping sonic soundscapes. Brimming with glitching electronics that alternate with hushed violin-laden melodies, the band’s newest track ‘Loved’ showcases a renewed progression and musical direction. With its stuttered start, syncopated, thumping percussion and prominent violin sections, ‘Loved’ is slightly slower and less cacophonic than their previous endeavours, yet while gang vocals remain intrinsic, they work their way around Alexander Comana’s solos with a lightness of touch and beautiful delicacy.”
